Twin Sleep Schedules by Age: Newborn to 24 Months

As a twin parent, one of the most common questions I hear is:
"What should my twins' schedule look like?"
The truth is that sleep schedules change significantly during the first two years. Newborn twins follow wake windows and flexible feeding routines, while older babies and toddlers thrive on more predictable, clock-based schedules.
As twin sleep consultant and twin mom, I've helped hundreds of families establish healthy sleep routines that keep both babies on the same schedule. Yes, it’s possible!
Before I dive into age-specific schedules, there is one important concept to understand.
Adjusted Age vs. Actual Age
Many twins arrive before their due date. If your babies are born prematurely, it is important to use take this information into consideration when creating and managing their sleep schedule. Your pediatrician is a great resource when deciding what age your twins are truly at. Maybe they are right in line with actual age, or they are needing more adjustment due to their prematurity. I’ve come up with a set of guidelines based on what I’ve seen over the years coaching triplets and twins. This will help you when evaluating sleep needs, wake windows, nap transitions, and developmental expectations for your twins.
In my experience, I notice that using adjusted age largely fades away once babies are on a two-nap schedule, around 6-8 months old.
Remember: your twins' due date still matters. Your babies are unique and will develop at their own timeline. With twins, its easy to compare them to each other. Believe me, I’ve been there! But at the end of the day, two individuals are growing side by side so there WILL be differences. It may not mean that anything is wrong, though. Newborn Twin Sleep Schedule (0–12 Weeks)
During the newborn stage, focus less on the clock and more on:
Feeding every 2.5–3 hours
Following wake windows
Practicing Eat, Wake, Sleep routines WHEN possible
Keeping both twins on the same schedule WHEN possible
Utilizing your village
Accepting the bad days as they come
Not sweating the small stuff
Typical Twin Newborn Wake Windows
0–4 weeks: 35–60 minutes
4–8 weeks: 45–75 minutes
8–12 weeks: 60–90 minutes
At this age, naps are unpredictable and bedtime may vary between 8:00–10:00 PM.
The goal is not a perfect schedule. The goal is consistency and finding a rhythm. Access our comprehensive Newborn Guide for more help and guidance.
3–4 Month Twin Sleep Schedule (12–16 Weeks)
As your twins become more alert, wake windows begin to lengthen and you will notice a pattern of awake time truly emerging.
Typical Wake Windows
75–120 minutes
Many twins are taking 4–5 naps per day.
A sample day may look like:
7:00 AM Wake
Feed
Nap
Feed
Nap
Feed
Nap
Feed
Catnap
Feed
8:00 PM Bedtime
This stage is still largely wake-window based but you may start to really focus on Eat/Wake/Sleep strategies.Â

4–6 Month Twin Sleep Schedule
Around 16 weeks, many twins become ready for a more predictable schedule where you can use a combination of wake times and times on the clock. Doing this will help establish predictability in morning wake times and bedtimes + naps.
Wake windows consist of 2+ hour durations while also using the clock as a guide.
Typical Wake Windows
2 hours to 2.75 hours
Sample Schedule ~ 5 months
7:00 AM Wake
9:00–10:30 AM Nap
12:30–2:00 PM Nap
4:30–5:00 PM Catnap
7:30 PM Bedtime
Most twins continue taking 3 naps until approximately 6–8 months.
6–9 Month Twin Sleep Schedule
Many twins transition to two naps during this stage. This may be a straightforward process or you may need to guide one or both twins into the new schedule. Expect that it will be rocky- but with consistency, the schedule will settle. I LOVE a truly clocked schedule at this age (no exceptions) I find it works really well for twins!
Sample Schedule
7:00 AM Wake
9:30–11:00 AM Nap
2:00–3:30 PM Nap
7:00 PM Bedtime
Consistency becomes increasingly important as mobility, teething, and developmental milestones emerge. As your baby turns 8 & 9 months old, more awake time will need to be added to the schedule- stretching their wake windows and shortening their naps slightly. Bedtime will also creep towards 8:00 pm.
10–14 Month Twin Sleep Schedule
By this age, many twins thrive on a predictable two-nap schedule.
Sample Schedule
7:00 AM Wake
10–11:00 AM Nap
2:30–3:45 PM Nap
8:00 PM Bedtime
If naps begin shortening or bedtime resistance increases, it may be time to gradually adjust wake windows and shorten their nap times down to an hour each.
15–24 Month Twin Sleep Schedule
Most toddlers transition from two naps to one nap between 15 and 17 months (sometimes sooner)
Once the transition is complete, I recommend protecting a long midday nap. Expect a long transition here. Your toddlers will need time to lengthen their nap, reroute their meals and deal with developmental setbacks like separation anxiety and FOMO.
Sample One-Nap Schedule
7:00 AM Wake
12:00 – 2:00 PM Nap (<17 months)
1:00–3:00 PM Nap (>18 months +)
7:00-8:00 PM Bedtime
This schedule typically works well throughout the second year and often beyond age two.
The exact timing may vary slightly depending on your child's sleep needs, but I generally recommend maintaining:
Consistent wake time
Midday nap
Predictable bedtime

Expert Sleep Tips for your Twins
The best twin sleep schedule is one that keeps both babies on the same routine while allowing for age-appropriate sleep needs as minor adjustments as needed.
In the early months, focus on wake windows, adjusted age and tapping into your village. The first few months are truly about survival and bonding. As your twins grow, gradually transition to predictable clock-based schedules that provide structure and consistency.
If you're struggling to establish a schedule that works for both twins, remember that you don't have to figure it out alone. I've helped hundreds of twin families create sleep routines that work in real life—because I’ve lived it myself.
Finding a predictable routine with my twins, and one that involved SLEEP, changed my life as a parent.
